Concept, Photographs and Interviews by Barry Shainbaum
Written by Madeleine Palko, Shannon Fitzgerald; Foreword by Uri Geller
Hope & Heroes: Portraits of Integrity & Inspiration is a photo-essay landmark giving witness to 47 heroes who offer hope and inspiration for the future. Each of the heroes' motives and issues are different, ranging from self-esteem to global peace, human and animal rights, the environment, business and political integrity, spirituality, addictions, racism and more. The common thread is integrity and triumph over adversity.
From the famous to the lesser known, these 47 heroes demonstrate how every person has the potential to make a difference in the world; from their own backyard, to global consciousness.
Each of the 47 principal photographs is full-page colour, photographed on location, and accompanied by a biography based on Barry's recorded personal interviews with the subjects. An additional 47 smaller photos appear at the back of the book, together with Barry's personal comments and insights about his encounter with each hero. Also included are website and email information for the heroes.
Hope & Heroes was inspired by Barry's own 18 year struggle with bipolar mood disorder, which against all odds he was cured of in 1989. Many of the people featured in this book inspired Barry during his darkest days.
Reviews:
Hope & Heroes touched me deeply. This remarkable book serves up a mixed broth of champions - from celebrities to ordinary people - achieving the extraordinary at home, in the community, and on the world stage. Barry's on-location camera and sympathetic interviews help us to connect with our own highest selves, and illustrate how we also might personally take up the challenge to make a difference. These profiles will inspire you to be all that you can be - in a world that desperately needs you to be just that.

Barry's own brave journey of recovery from mental illness provides a rare and humane lens through which to view many valuable perspectives on life's journey, adversity, balance and hope. Each portrait and biography reflects in some way Barry's own struggle, the set backs and successes which really led to his undertaking this project. We all need hope and heroes. Read and experience this book. It will be good for your mental health.
